About the event

El Cruce is one of the most iconic and demanding stage trail races in South America, offering a once-in-a-lifetime crossing of the Andes Mountains. This epic multi-day event takes runners on a challenging yet deeply rewarding adventure through the wild heart of Patagonia, with the mighty Volcán Lanín as a constant backdrop. Over three days, participants traverse breathtaking landscapes—crossing high-altitude mountain passes, dense native forests, volcanic ridges, and glacial rivers. The experience is not just about distance; it’s about resilience, self-discovery, and camaraderie with fellow runners from around the globe. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY Runners must have excellent physical training and previous experience in adventure races. All participants must present a fitness certificate signed by a doctor to the organisers. STARTS For the start of Stage 1, participants will need to be transported by buses from San Martín de los Andes. The start of Stage 2 will be from the Camp. Once the second stage is completed, all runners will be transported by buses to Camp 2. Finally, Stage 3 will start within Camp 2 and finish in the centre of San Martín de los Andes. OASES In this edition of El Cruce, there will be one Oasis in Stage 1, one in Stage 2, and two in Stage 3. The locations of these will be announced along with the elevation profiles of each stage. At each supply station, runners will find: WATER GATORADE SOFT DRINKS FRUITS SAVOURY SNACKS SWEET SNACKS It is prohibited to leave poles, clothing, backpacks, or any personal or non-personal items at the Oases. CHECKPOINTS (CP) The marked route will have Checkpoints (CP) that competitors must pass through. At each CP, there will be a person from the Organisation responsible for that checkpoint. In specific cases, there may only be a signal. Skipping a CP will result in disqualification from the race unless the runner goes back to pass through it. TIME LIMITS AND CUT-OFF POINTS The Organisation will set time limits for each stage. Based on these, they will determine CUT-OFF POINTS along the routes. Time limits for GROUP 1: 12 minutes per kilometre. Time limits for GROUPS 2, 3, and 4: 14 minutes per kilometre. At the Cut-Off Points, competitors must stop and will be transported by the Organisation to the next camp. The following day, they can continue the race but will be classified after the last runner who completed the full route. The Organisation’s decision to enforce the cut-off due to time limit expiry is final and must be adhered to. Any competitor who does not comply will be automatically disqualified and will not be allowed to continue in the following stages. Additionally, the Organisation has the authority to enforce cut-offs due to weather conditions at points on the route they deem necessary.
