About the event

The MTC Severn Challenge is one of the UK’s most formidable multi-day ultra races, spanning 220 miles (354 km) along the entire Severn Way—from the wild Cambrian Mountains to the Severn Estuary. With a finisher rate of just 26%, it demands relentless endurance, but from 2025, the experience has become more accessible with hotel accommodations replacing tents, offering athletes real rest between stages. Each of the five consecutive stages—from the 26-mile (42 km) opener at MTC Hafren to the 59-mile (95 km) MTC Severn Path Ultra—presents its own terrain, challenges, and unique finisher medal. Complete all five, and your medals form a jigsaw-scale replica of the route. Expect varied trail conditions, river crossings, and overgrown footpaths as you trace Britain’s longest riverside path. The race atmosphere is focused, with a strong sense of camaraderie and quiet determination, supported by an experienced crew and a backdrop of evolving scenery, from forested uplands to historic cities.

Highlights

With a 220-mile (354 km) course and around 26% finisher rate, the Severn Challenge pushes physical and mental limits unlike any other UK ultra.

Participants recover each night in hotel beds—enabling better rest and performance without sacrificing the race’s intensity.

Each stage finishes with a custom medal; complete all five and the set forms a detailed jigsaw map of your mount to coast journey.

Course highlights

Utilising the longest riverside path in Britain, the ‘Severn Challenge’ takes you along 210 miles of path, from the source of Afon Hafren (Welsh for River Severn) to the mouth of the River Severn. Added to this the four mile trek to reach the ‘source’, the ‘Severn Challenge’ commands an impressive distance of around 220 miles. Conditions vary each year, and although the run mainly stays on the Severn Way Footpath, some paths / fields can be overgrown in places making the race even more of a challenge.
