About the event

The Trail Grigne Sud is a mountain race across the dramatic southern slopes of the Grigne massif. Runners choose between a challenging 42km route with 3,700m ascent or a shorter 22km option with 1,800m climb. The trails connect Mandello del Lario's picturesque lakeside with the rugged peaks beneath Sasso Cavallo. This demanding course rewards athletes with breathtaking views of Lake Como and alpine meadows. Wild chamois often watch as runners pass through their mountain habitat.

Highlights

Finishers receive a handcrafted medal depicting the Grigne peaks. The event contributes to the upkeep of historic alpine trails. After the race, participants can enjoy local wines and hear stories shared by mountain guides.

Course highlights

TGS Extreme (42km 3700 D+) The long route winds almost entirely on mountain paths for a length of 42 kilometers and a good 3700 meters of positive altitude difference. After leaving the lake and the center of Mandello del Lario (200 m) and continuing towards the hamlet of Somana, the path immediately climbs into the woods for the first major climb up to Zucco Sileggio (1323 m – km 9). From here, a little downhill, but mostly still uphill, you continue on the panoramic ridge until you reach the summit of Monte Pilastro and the maximum altitude of the route (1800 m). Descent to Bocchetta di Prada, a quick traverse along the coast, up to the Bietti-Buzzi refuge (1700 m – km 16). From here, a descent into the beech forest leads straight to Alpe Calivazzo, then to Era Bassa (835 m – km 22), where the first time gate is located 5 hours before the start. The second climb begins, which gradually leads to the Elisa Refuge (1485 m – km 26.5), passing through the legendary Spaola and the Casel di Barc, a new feature on the route and a spectacular panoramic point over the Grigne and the lake. The route descends into Gardata (1020 m) and further down to the Grotta dell'Acqua Bianca and the Ponte di Ferro over the Meria Torrent. A steep climb leads to the town of Versarico (730 m – km 33), where the second time limit is set at 8.15 hours. Here the last climb to Zucco di Manavello begins (1030 m – km 36). The final descent, steep in the first part and easier to run after, closes the arc to Mandello del Lario. TGS Sprint (22km 1800 D+) The short route also runs almost entirely on mountain paths, for a shorter distance: 22 kilometers for 1800 meters of altitude difference. After leaving the center of Mandello del Lario (200 m) and continuing towards the hamlet of Somana, the route separates from that of the long race, turning right and starting to climb through the woods. Passing by the little church of Santa Maria, you arrive at the Era Bassa alp (822 m – km 8). Another steep climb to Gardata (1020 m – km 10), where the route rejoins that of the long race. You descend to the Grotta dell'Acqua Bianca and the Ponte di Ferro over the Meria stream and up again to reach the town of Versarico (730 m – km 14), where the time gate is set 4 hours from the start. The second climb begins towards the last peak: Zucco di Manavello (1030 m – km 17). The final descent, steep in the first part and more runnable after, closes the arc up to Mandello del Lario.
