 Is it going to rain? Is it going to be sunny? Both runners and the organizers were burbling among them. „It feels pleasant to finally get back to those typical questions before a race“, could be heard all around. 
 Today, Saturday, June 26, RunCzech got its 2021 season going, this time with the opportunity to welcome over 1700 runners and families on the start line. 
 The leading pack was composed of the best Czech athletes chasing fast times and award podium place, but the event was all about restarting running in the country – for all. The first to try the new race course were the participants of the dm Family Run, from babies in trolleys to seniors, running or walking through the best part of the city, between colonnades and springs, enjoying under the banner of ALL RUNNER ARE BEAUTIFUL.

 „This was a great moment to get together with friends and other sportsmen, and remind ourselves how beautiful Karlovy Vary is“, said Petr Kulhanek, governor of the region and passionate runner. 
 The Half Marathon kicked off in two waves, in compliance with the actual health regulations serviced by the organizers and the local authorities. 
The best man Vit Pavlista and the best woman Hana Homolkova finished in 1:07:18 and in 1:20:36 respectively, tagging along over a thousand hobby runners behind them. 
 „It’s great to see streets filled with people. I admire the organizers for putting together such a sportive festival under difficult circumstances, and I thank our citizens and guests for respecting all the health and security precautions“, said the starter of the race, Petr Bursik, the deputy mayor of Karlovy Vary. 
 A 15min TV report will be shown on the Czech National TV Sport on July 1 at 1:30pm. The atmosphere can be felt also on the RunCzech YouTube channel. 
 What’s next? RunCzech is introducing a brand new race in its portfolio, the Generali Česká Red Run, taking place on Saturday, July 24, on a surprising course – the biathlon areal in Nove Mesto na Morave, where the IBU World Cup took place. Registrations are open on www.runczech.com.

 This year’s Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon (an IAAF Gold Label road race) will go down in history. In the event’s sixth year, the half marathon heralded its first ever European winners among both men and women. As predicted by the pundits, Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová took first place. “Until recently I could never have envisaged winning such a race. It’s an amazing feeling,” shared the Czech number one as she crossed the finish. When it came to the men, Ukrainian representative Roman Romanenko took the number one podium spot. As such the Karlovy Vary race has launched the EuroHeroes project – a new joint RunCzech and European Athletics initiative which aims to promote the development of athletics on the Old Continent. 
 Number one Czech long-distance runner Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová, (who set a new Czech half marathon record of 1:11:01 at Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon 2018) was the hot favourite to win among women and proved the predictions were spot on from the very first metres. She left no room for her European rivals to get ahead and brought an end to the 18-year wait for the first Czech winner at RunCzech races – a feat last achieved by Jana Klimešová at the Prague half marathon back in 2000. 
 Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová was clearly bursting with joy as she crossed the finish, despite spending most of the race alone. “I didn’t have any target finishing time in mind, but even so it was tough right from the start – I was running alone, there was a strong wind and I didn’t appreciate seeing all the guys run past me. Fortunately two men caught up with me at the tenth kilometre, and worked amazingly well with me, which helped me out a lot. I’m going to have to think of some kind of suitable reward,” the champion joked. 
 In traditional RunCzech race style, she was also spurred on by the fantastic crowds lining the streets. “I had an amazing race and really loved the backdrop. I could really feel the support of those watching which is one of the reasons why I love RunCzech races so much,” Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová revealed, adding her enthusiasm for the EuroHeroes project. “It has allowed me to fulfil a dream of mine and hear the Czech national anthem at a RunCzech race. I’m also aware that the world is still out there and it’s a huge source of inspiration for me to keep on improving.” The Karlovy Vary race was also a good preparation for the European Championships in Berlin this August. 
 Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová crossed the finish in 1:11:54, enhancing the Czech race record by more than five minutes. Ukrainian runner Olha Kotovská came in second place with a time of 1:16:16 followed by another Czech runner Kristýna Dvořáková (1:17:46) in third. The third Czech to cross the finish was Marcela Joglová (1:18:19). 
 When it came to the top podium spots among the men, it was a battle between Ukraine and Spain. As the race progressed the fastest runner group gradually thinned out leaving Roman Romanenko and Houssame Bennabou at the helm. At the 14th kilometre, the Ukrainian Romanenko cranked up the pace, leaving Bennabou struggling to keep up. “I felt good and told myself I’d try to go for it. I believed I was capable of maintaining my pace right until the finish and am pleased I managed to do it,” the delighted runner revealed who still had some energy reserves at the finish to join in the celebration with the crowd. The Ukrainian athlete triumphed with a time of 1:03:58, with Houssame Bennabou finishing in 1:04:16. Ukrainian runner Serhiy Lebid finished third in 1:05:08. 
 The clear favourite among the Czech men was Ondřej Fejfar. And just like Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová, he had no intention of disappointing fans. “I had a great race today, it was one of my best half marathons on record and I’m really pleased. I find the course magical here, as ever the atmosphere was amazing with people spurring me on to give more, I didn’t even notice the hills,” Fejfar revealed and clearly delighted with his Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon time of 1:07:45. Joining him on the podium were Jiří Petr (1:11:23) and Petr Kubričan (1:11:34). 
 A total of 9 European nationalities were represented at the EuroHeroes project launched in the world famous spa Czech town. 
 This year’s Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon saw almost 4000 runners taking part in the main race. The accompanying dm Family Run played host to over 2,700 participants.

Europeans reign supreme at Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon

 Vrabcová-Nývltová is the hot favourite to win. 
 The sixth Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon has drawn top runners from all over Europe to the spa town. Designed to promote the development of athletics on the Old Continent, the RunCzech initiative EuroHeroes (in cooperation with European Athletics) will get underway in Karlovy Vary. Eva Vrabcová-Nývltová is the hot favourite to win the women’s race. 
 Where as in previous years African winners have typically secured the top podium spots at the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon (IAAF Gold Label race), this year the organisers are keen to give European and above all Czech athletes a chance to take to the limelight here. “To make European and Czech athletics competitive on an international level, we feel the need to offer these athletes greater space to grow at our races. We hope this step will be a new motivation for the runners and that they run new personal records in Karlovy Vary, ” RunCzech race coordinator Tomáš Mirovský reveals. 
 Headed by multiple European cross-country running champion Sergej Lebid from Ukraine, a total of six runners all with personal bests under one hour and four minutes will be taking part in the race. Young Spanish talent Houssam Benabbou, who ran a new personal best of 1:03:35 is also expected to deliver a high calibre performance. 
 Ondřej Fejfar will likely reign supreme among the Czech men appearing in the spa town. “Karlovy Vary is close to my heart. I was here for the first event year back in 2013 and have enjoyed coming back to the city ever since. It’s just a wonderful race and the great fans always spur me on to put on a decent performance,” said the runner who scooped up first place among the Czechs in 2013 and 2014 and finished second in 2016. Other Czech top athletes taking part include Jiří Petr, Tomáš Navrátil, plus locals Jan Sokol and Pavel Procházka 
 The clear favourite among the women is Eva Vrabcová Nývltová who managed to smash the longstanding Czech half marathon record with her time of 1:11:01 at this year’s Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon. “Competing at the European Championships is the main highlight for me this year, but I’m also really looking forward to running in Karlovy Vary. I want to soak up the atmosphere and give it my best,” revealed Vrabcová, who is expected to launch an assault on the Czech event record of 1:17:31 held by Ivana Sekyrová since 2013. 
 She’s likely to face high calibre competition however including from Lithuanian Olympian Vaida Zusinaite. The aforementioned local racer Ivana Sekyrová will also be keen to leave her mark as will Petra Kamínková from Olomouc who has claimed victory among the Czech women for the past three years in a row. Medicine student Kristýna Dvořáková and outstanding cyclist Tereza Korvasová are also in great shape and may just have a few surprises up their sleeves. 
 For the first time this year awards will also be handed out for the fastest man and woman of the Karlovy Vary Region who will pick up regional king and queen trophies respectively.

 EuroHeroes is a new initiative by RunCzech to celebrate European running stars and promote active lifestyles in Europe. The initiative aims to find new sporting heroes and motivate the public to exercise. “We want to devote our top quality event in Karlovy Vary to discover new heroes and to create local legends that will inspire others to take up sport and lead an active lifestyle,” says Carlo Capalbo, President of the RunCzech Organising Committee and Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission. 
 This new initiative of RunCzech joins the efforts of the European Athletics . “All the RunCzech races are five-star quality road races as awarded by European Athletics’ Running for All platform along with them being IAAF gold label races, for which RunCzech should be very proud. It is very important that European athletes get more opportunities to race at the top level in road races across Europe and EuroHeroes is a fantastic initiative to encourage and promote our road race stars on the continent,” said Svein Arne Hansen, European Athletics President.

 European athletics stars to compete at Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon

Race records under assault at Karlovy Vary Half Marathon

 The men’s and women’s races could not have been more different. From the start of the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon, a group of seven elite men worked together to set an aggressive pace despite the heat and the hilly course. Kenyan Abraham Akopesha was accompanied by four of his countrymen, plus Moroccan Mustapha El Aziz and Eritrean Simon Tesfay.

Akopesha made his first big push at 15K, and the two least experienced runners in the field went with him – Wilson Too and Evans Kerui were making their half marathon debut. Akopesha was able to separate from them, but then seemed to struggle for a time, allowing the two young upstarts to reel him in. “I was thinking that I needed to win, because I knew my two friends were making their debut. That is what made me push hard the second time.” Akopesha found the strength to pull away again, crossing the line first in 1:02:08. Kerui came second, 19 seconds behind the winner, and Too finished another 21 seconds back. With Amos Kurgat rallying to run 1:03:35, the Kenyan runners swept the top 4 places. The time was not what Abraham wanted, perhaps because of the difficult conditions, but for two first-time runners at this distance the race yielded an impressive start to promising careers. 
 The women’s race was the exact opposite: by 5K the lead group was down to three, with 23-year-old Kenyan Joyceline Jepkosgei in front followed by veteran countrywoman Caroline Kilel and Ethiopian Ayantu Gemechu. That was the last time Jepkosgei saw her competition. Jepkosgei says, “At 8K, I looked around, and there was nobody. So I had to push myself the rest of the way. The men on the motorbike were my best friends! They were encouraging me to push forward, and the cheering crowd also helped give me strength.” The heat had an effect on her as well, as she felt tightness in her hamstring late in the race that prevented her from shifting gears for one final push. Nonetheless, Jepkosgei broke the race record by clocking 1:09:07, opening up a gap of 2:12 over eventual runner-up Gemechu. Ethiopia got a second runner on the podium when Bekelech Daba moved into third, followed closely by Risa Takenaka of Japan. 
 Jepkosgei is a member of the RunCzech Racing team, which helps up-and-coming runners by providing lodging and support while racing in Europe. Her breakthrough race, in her first international competition, will certainly earn her more invitations in the future – and she says she knows she can run faster still. 
 If Jepkosgei had a kindred spirit during the race, it was Milan Kocourek. The top Czech finisher was in the second group of men early, but he was able to separate from them and then forced to pace himself for much of the race. Also like Jepkosgei, he struggled a little bit: “I was not satisfied with the way the race felt. I believe I can go up to a minute faster in the future.” Kocourek battled through his discomfort to post the fastest time ever for a Czech runner in this event, finishing 10th overall in 1:06:51. Petra Kaminkova was the top Czech female, her time of 1:17:55 earning her 7th place overall. 
 Karlovy Vary lived up to its reputation as a race that young runners can use as a springboard to future success, and both race winners were quick to show their desire to return. “Next year, I guarantee we will challenge the course record,” says Akopesha, with Jepkosgei showing her wide smile and nodding next to him.

Searching For a Breakthrough at Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon

 Four men will chase the elusive sub-60-minute mark, while prolific road racer Caroline Kilel of Kenya will seek to score her first half marathon victory in almost two years during the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon on May 21. 
 The Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon is the third of seven races in the RunCzech Running League, and the first of the Czech regional races outside the capital city of Prague. Now in its fourth year, the race will carry, for the first time, an IAAF Gold Label as one of the highest regarded half marathons in the world. 
 Tucked 120 km away from Prague in the Ore Mountains, Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is a popular tourist destination not only for its hilly scenery and spa tradition, but also for the rich history, recaptured in the breathtaking Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. 
 Karlovy Vary has attracted many great musicians, scientists, artists and dignitaries of the 19th century: Beethoven, Chopin, Freud, Mozart, Goethe, Franz Joseph I and others. Celebrities still flock here to make beautiful films and to enjoy the annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Landmarks in the Karlovy Vary region include Loket Castle, Bečov Castle and Chateau, with the unique Reliquary of Saint Maurus. 
 The race follows a scenic route along the Teplá River to the colonnade and continues passing by many enchanting buildings and promenade halls which appeared in famous films. 
 But don’t let the charming backdrop fool you. This course can be fast, as was proven last year when Kenya’s Elijah Tirop Serem broke the men’s course record, finishing in 61:01, while Ethiopia’s Mula Seboka lowered the women’s course mark by six seconds to 69:11. 
 But those records won’t last long if this year’s field has anything to say about it. 
 In the women’s race, everyone figures to be chasing the 35-year-old Kilel, the 2011 Boston Marathon champion and two-time winner of the Frankfurt Marathon. Kilel comes into the race in fairly strong shape, having just won the Daegu Marathon on April 3 in 2:27:39. At the half marathon distance, it has been seven years since she clocked her PB of 68:16 in Birmingham and two and a half years since her last triumph, in Keringet (72:15). 
 But Kilel isn’t likely to be handed victory easily by her opponents. 
 Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya ran 69:09 at altitude to finish second in the Nairobi Half Marathon on March 6; Bekelech Daba of Ethiopia is a 70:09 half marathoner and is coming off a solid 2:29:50 in the Nagoya Marathon on March 13; and Risa Takenaka of Japan has run 70:10 for the half and finished third in the Osaka Women’s Marathon in 2:29:14 on Jan. 31. 
 On the men’s side, there are four runners within in realistic striking distance of Serem’s standard. Leading the way will be Abraham Kasongor of Kenya, who ran 60:25 in a sixth-place finish in Istanbul last April. 
 Kasongor figures to get a strong challenge from a trio of men who have already run well this year. Mustapha El Aziz of Morocco won the Marrakech Half Marathon on January 31 in a personal-best 60:39. Simon Tesfai of Eritrea comes into the race fresh off a runner-up finish in 61:00 at the Berlin Half Marathon on April 3. Marofit Mourad of Morocco, winner of the 2010 Birell Prague Grand Prix 10K and a 61:43 half marathoner, has broken 30-minutes for the 10K in two of his three races this year, including a 28:37 victory in the St. Patrick’s Day 10K in Holyoke, Mass. 
 There will be plenty of local support for the Czech elites competing. On the men’s side Milan Kocourek, who just ran 64:23 in the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon in April, heads that list. 43-year-old Petra Kaminkova, who ran her PB of 72:17 in Prague in 2014, is the top Czech in the women’s field.

Fast Times, Leading Lady The Top Plotlines At Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon

 Elijah led a Kenyan quartet to victory and took 20 seconds off the event record to win the men’s title at the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon in the Czech Republic on Saturday. Tirop broke away from the leading group with four kilometres left to achieve what he described as the best win of his career in 61:01. Nicholas Kipkemboi finished second in 61:13 and Bernard Bett third in 61:22. 
 The Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race. 
 The pace was strong from the start with the lead group going through 10km in 28:43 and on course to take almost a minute off the event record of 61:21, set last year by Ethiopia’s Teshome Mekonen. But the course was testing with frequent short climbs and a gentle breeze for the evening start in the historic Spa town gained in strength by mid-race. By 15 km four men were in contention: Tirop and the joint fastest men on the start line, Nicholas Kipkemboi and Edwin Kiptoo plus Bernard Bett. Kiptoo was the first to falter and then Elijah Tirop, growing in confidence, increased the pressure. 
 “I thought then it was up to me. We were running to break the event record and I felt strong,” reflected Elijah Kirop. Nicholas Kipkemboi finished 12 seconds adrift and Bernard Bett 21 seconds behind the winner.

 Mulu Seboka won the women’s title, running 69:11 for a personal best and a event record by six seconds. The prolific marathoner from Ethiopia went clear at 13 km on an undulating course. Kenya’s Linah Cheruto finished second with a personal best of 70:22 while Bahrain’s Eunice Chumba placed third in 70:59. 
 Seboka’s improvement at half marathon was long overdue, chiefly because she has concentrated on the full distance in recent years. That paid off with 2:21:56 for sixth place in Dubai in January and she admitted her marathon strength gave her confidence. 
 The Ethiopian broke away from Linah Cheruto of Kenya and Bahrain’s Eunice Chumba at 13km, running strongly on the long road to the finish. The margin of victory was over a minute as Seboka finished in 69:11, well clear of Kenya’s Linah Cheruto who also set a personal best. Eunice Chumba finished third, almost two minutes behind the winner. Mulu Seboka will be back on the Czech roads for the Olomouc Half Marathon on June 20 and is keen to press her claims for marathon selection for Ethiopia at the World Championships in Beijing. 
 The half marathon debut of Ireland’s Fionnuala Britton ended in eighth place in 73:46. Britton’s talent at the distance events has been amply proven by her two European Cross Country titles but on this exploration of new territory she was never a threat to the leaders.
